Elbert P. Tuttle United States Court of Appeals Building

Under a previous GSA IDIQ contract, Smoak Designs provided design of high-level security systems for this historic federal courthouse. The facility is a prominent presence on a high-traffic city street in Atlanta.

Because of its location at street level and curbside, it has no perimeter setbacks; and this could potentially subject the facility to increased security threat. Recent federal mandates and security requirements called for design and implementation of high UL Level 4 ballistic, bomb, and bio/chemical release measures in the event of an interior assault. Smoak Designs specified exterior high impact pop-up bollards to be installed in the street to prevent vehicular forced entry or assault at the rear entrance of the building. Concrete planters had already been situated at street level at the front of the building to provide a vehicle intrusion barrier at the main pedestrian entrance.

This project also called for a design study for first-floor HVAC, a feasibility study for a new generator, and fire alarm system replacement.
